The peat cutters and longboat-pullers may have long gone, the history of the extraction of peat and its trade can still be felt along the Peat route (“Turfroute”) through Friesland, Northwest-Overijssel and Drenthe. The Peat route is a beautiful route through a varied area. The villages en route are friendly stops and also the hinterland offers ample sights and all the beauty that nature has to offer. We recommend bringing bicycles on board.
The Peat route is suitable for the experienced skipper. A route with many locks and also self-service bridges. The sailing time per day is also determined by the bridge times and the number of ships en route with you. Experience is not required but will work to your advantage.
